I have many of them and it may run up a high cleaners bill

if you’re spending your money on cashmere sweaters, i would think you would also be willing to spend the money to keep them looking good. if the tag says dry clean only, take it in. if it says hand wash, lay flat to dry, then you can do that. i have found that even if a sweater says it is hand washable, that is a lie, and they may still shrink.

You can hand-wash them, do so very carefully in cold water with mild detergent, such as a baby shampoo or Ivory flakes. This method might keep your garment softer for longer, but it can also change the shape if not done properly. Let the garment soak in lukewarm water for 5 minutes. Then, gently squeeze the suds through the fibers and continue this light squeezing as you rinse the sweater in lukewarm water. Be careful not to wring your sweater. Roll it in a towel and lay it flat to dry, blocking it into its desired shape. To help perk up the fibers, you can place the sweater inside out in a lingerie bag and put it in the dryer on a delicate, no heat setting.

Cashmere is hair of a fancy goat. I have found that shampoo is wonderful for cleaning sweaters like yours. The trick is to have a place to dry them where it will dry in just the shape you had originally. I put two layers of towels over the top of my dryer and lay it there.

Wash is in a very gentle solution such as Woolite or Lux Flakes etc. Do not wring - instead roll in a large, moisture-loving towel to remove excess moisture and then leave out flat to dry on a towel. If you have access to a flat sweater drying device, use it.

Hand-wash in tepid water with a little shampoo. (You can use conditioner too to keep soft) Rinse well then roll the sweater up in a towel and press with your hands to remove excess water (DO NOT TWIST OR WRING). Unroll towel and lay sweater flat to dry. You may use a warm iron on the inside if needed.
